Richard Becomes Sixth Degree Black Belt

In November 2009, under Grand Master John Murphy and Senior Master John Douglas, Richard Turner received his Master ranking Sixth Degree Black Belt in the Wa Do Kai system, a Japanese hard style karate. In the martial arts world. Mister Turner is now Master Turner.

Supporting Our Troops with Free Books: Operation EBook Drop

I’m a big supporter of our troops, so when I heard about Operation EBook Drop, I signed up to be part of the project.

When author Ed Patterson met a deployed soldier online, he learned that the soldier couldn’t download books from Amazon to his Kindle because the Whispernet service doesn’t work in Iraq. Ed gave the soldier copies of his own books and contacted other authors to join him in Operation EBook Drop.

He collects the names and e-mail addresses of deployed soldiers who request free e-books and passes the information on to participating authors. The authors contact the soldiers directly to offer their e-books for free download, usually by a discount code at Smashwords. Soldiers can choose the format that works on their e-book reader or computer.

Details of how to participate either as an author donating books or a soldier receiving them can be found on the Smashwords blog post about Operation EBook Drop. I hope you will help spread the word.

John Walton Faro World Record

John Walton is my friend and partner in producing the Gold Seal Bicycle Playing Cards.

On August 14, 2009, at the Magic Castle, using the Gold Seal Bikes, John broke the Guinness world’s record of perfect faro shuffles in a row. If you miss you’re done—you can’t start over. This adds pressure and requires unbelievable concentration.

The old record was 1200 perfect faros in twelve hours. John Walton did 2784 perfect faros in a row in twelve hours. He kicked the old record off the planet!

Richard Turner and son Asa Spades Turner will teach a summer class on Card Magic for kids ages 7 and up at San Antonio Academy.

Here is the course description:

In the Card Magic class, Mr. Turner will teach the students to perform magic tricks and some of the secret card moves used by the notorious card sharks of the Old West; such as card fans, one hand cuts and shuffles, and many more amazing card tricks. They will amaze their friends and completely baffle their parents. The history of these crazy gamblers is related through the use of interactive games created by Mr. Turner that students will get to keep. In addition to the card tricks and historical aspects of the class, Richard Turner’s amazing card performances and stories teach students why cheaters never prosper. … This class continues to intrigue and fascinate new and returning students.
