John Douglas explains, “The grocery store where Sensei Murphy works as a meat cutter is in a rough part of town. Whenever trouble erupts, the manager always summons his black-belt fighter. On one occasion, a customer was spotted trying to steal a bottle of whiskey. Once alerted Sensei confronted the thief. Sensei calmly warned the guy, ‘If you try to leave, I will have to stop you!’

The man, the size of a bear, and about ninety pounds heavier than Sensei froze in place, but still held his ground. “The bear appeared ready to charge ahead.”

Sensei gently shook his head to and fro, a tacit signal that silently warned, ‘You really don’t want to do that!’
